About the Department

Background of the Department

The Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) Department is committed to advancing the development and education of young children through a comprehensive academic and professional program. Recognizing the critical role of early childhood education in shaping a child’s future, the department aligns with international, regional, and national priorities to prepare skilled professionals who will make a significant impact in the field of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE).

This department was established in 2017 as part of the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences. It began with an inaugural cohort of 50 students and has successfully graduated four classes of professionals since then. Currently, the department has an enrolment of 76 students across two modalities: regular and summer programs. This includes 22 second-year students, 13 third-year students in the regular program, and 41 students in the summer program for the bachelor’s degree.

The ECCE program is built on a community-based philosophy, ensuring its relevance to local needs. By integrating teaching, research, and community service, the program equips students and faculty to address practical challenges in early childhood education. Active engagement with the community fosters collaboration and delivers impactful solutions.

The department adheres to Ethiopia’s 2010 National Policy Framework for ECCE and the Education Sector Development Programs (ESDPs) while contributing to global priorities like the United Nations’ Education for All (EFA) targets and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which emphasize access to quality early education.

Playing a key role in capacity building, the department trains educators, advocates for child rights, and establishes model early childhood centers that serve as both quality care providers and learning laboratories for the community. By meeting the growing demand for qualified ECCE professionals and contributing to policy and practice advancements, the department ensures that children receive the foundational care and education necessary for lifelong success.
