About the College

Background of the College

The College of education and behavioral sciences is one of the colleges established in 2012, under Woldia University. It was established to achieve the three pillars of higher education institutions – providing teaching learning, demand driven community engagement and technology transfer, and conducting problem solving researches.

The college aims to bring rapid, sustainable and economic growth by accomplishing the three missions. The College started in 2012 by launching Psychology and Pedagogical Science with composite Geography and environmental science. The college was started with one professor and eight lecturers. Over time, it made tremendous changes both in the expansion of different programs and staffs. Immediately after establishment, the college has invested a lot of effort to begin higher diploma program (HDP) in Woldia University to facilitate in-service learning among university staff. Later it also include English language improvement program (ELIP) for University instructors until the introduction of the new structure in 2023 at Woldia University.

In 2014, the college launched postgraduate program in Educational Psychology in summer program. The College also opened special needs and inclusive education (SNIE), Early childhood care and education (ECCE) and Lifelong learning and community development departments in its undergraduate program in 2016. Furthermore, postgraduate programs in Counseling Psychology, Educational Planning and Management, and Curriculum and Instruction were launched in 2020. The college also opened these programs in Gashena and Sekota centers via the extension program to assure equity and access to higher education to the surrounding community. In sum, the college has five undergraduate and four post graduate programs currently.

With regard to human resource, the college has senior academic staffs in different specializations. Currently the college has 8 assistant professors and 46 lecturers, 2 technical assistants who are actively engaged in teaching learning, research and community engagement in the university. The College has 8 PhD candidates who are attending their education in different universities & outside of Ethiopia, who are an asset to achieve the college’s mission in the future.

The college is actively engaging in shouldering its social responsibility by actively participating in psycho-social support of war affected communities, women, children, IDPs, people with disabilities, illegal migrants, mental health and drug addiction, enhancing the life skill of female university students, career counseling for university students, induction training for fresh instructors and providing special summer capacity building and short term trainings for general education teachers and school leaders. Hence, the college would like to invite governmental, non-governmental and individuals to cooperatively work on the above cross cutting issues

Produce citizens who are equipped with knowledge, skills and ethics by providing quality and relevant education and training, and to contribute significantly to the development and progress of the region and the country by conducting problem-solving researches; facilitating technology transfer and enhancing community engagements.
