About the Department

Background of the Department

Psychology is one of the programs opened in 2012 to fulfill the country’s mission in producing well-educated, skilled in research and problem-solving abilities. When it opened in 2012, the department’s name was School & Counseling Psychology. Later considering its similarities with the BA degree in psychology and the challenges our graduates faced to enter the national career market and following the decision of the Ministry of Education the name of the program and the department changed to Psychology.

One of the justifications for the revision was there has been no significant difference between the usual Psychology degree and School & Counseling Psychology degree in major competency areas. So, in 2022 the name of the program officially changed to the Department of Psychology. In addition to its degree program, starting from 2014 master’s program in Educational Psychology and 2020 master’s program in Counseling Psychology are launched in our department and the programs are opened in both the Woldia campus and Sekota center.

Moreover, the MA programs admit students in regular, extension, and summer modalities for the last ten years. Seven batches were graduated from the conception of the department. In doing so, it has contributed many psychologists who can serve the community wherever they are engaged to apply the principles of psychology. The program is committed to the scientific study of the mind and behavior. Students acquire proficiency in scientific research methodologies, and basic counseling skills, and can analyze data through a combination of classroom education and practical practice. It also helps the student to develop critical thinking and problem-solving abilities and investigate several areas of psychology, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the discipline and its importance in comprehending behavior.

Through the use of practicum, internship, research, and community service activities, the program enables students to be competent to work in different sectors and contexts of society.
